Hitting the beach? Don't forget the suncreen!

If there’s one skincare step you absolutely cannot skip—especially in the summer—it’s sunscreen. I know you’ve heard it a million times, but even the most skincare-savvy people are still getting a few key things wrong when it comes to SPF. Let’s clear it up (pun intended).

You Need Sunscreen Every. Single. Day.

Yes, even if you’re indoors. Yes, even if it’s cloudy. Yes, even if you “don’t burn.” UV rays are sneaky. UVA rays (the ones responsible for premature aging) can penetrate windows. And if you're out and about—even just walking to your car or running errands—you’re being exposed. SPF is your best defense against not just sunburn, but fine lines, dark spots, and serious concerns like skin cancer.

SPF in Your Makeup Isn’t Enough

I love a multitasking product as much as anyone, but let’s be real: the SPF in your foundation or tinted moisturizer is not enough to protect your skin on its own. Why? Because you’re likely not applying enough of it to get the full labeled protection. Think of it as a bonus, not your main line of defense. Apply your sunscreen as the last step in your skincare routine: after moisturizer, before putting on makeup.

Reapplying Doesn’t Have to Mess Up Your Makeup

Here’s the part most people struggle with: you have to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when you're exposed to the sun. That doesn’t mean you HAVE to slather on a greasy cream over your makeup (because… no thanks). Here are my favorite ways to reapply SPF without ruining your look:

  • SPF Powders: These are great for touch-ups, especially if you tend to get oily. Look for ones with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients. Just tap or brush on like you would your setting powder. Colorscience, Supergoop!, and Isdin all make some great options (Supergoop! Even makes some for your hair part!)

  • Cushion Compacts with SPF: Think of these like blotting and protecting at the same time. Pat, press, and go. They’re amazing for on-the-go reapplication and won’t mess up your base. They come in tinted and untinted options.

  • Setting Sprays with SPF: Lightweight, refreshing, and invisible. Keep one in your bag and spritz every couple of hours. Just make sure it offers broad-spectrum protection (UVA + UVB), and shake it well before spraying.

  • Hate Sunscreen?: "It feels too greasy," "It gives me a white cast," When in doubt, go Korean! Asian SPF is some of the best on the market, with high-tech filters and skin-loving finishes. Need a rec? Check out this best-selling formula!

  • Don't forget a hat!: Or in my case, a sunshield, or hat! These sun protection tools are amazing for long days at the beach, outdoor festivals, and especially post-procedure (when you're running out to your car after your laser treatment or chemical peel!). Bluestone Sunshields also block out heat, keeping you super cool! A super chich rash guard is also great for long days in the sun

A Few More SPF Truth Bombs:

  • SPF 50 doesn’t mean double the protection of SPF 25. It’s a marginal difference—but it does last slightly longer. Still, reapplication is more important than going for the highest number possible. When in doubt, make sure your sunscreen is SPF 30+.

  • Yes, you need it on your lips, ears, eyelids, and

. Don’t forget those sneaky spots, especially on kids and men! And don't forget the hair part! Another reason why hats are a great option!

  • Your sunscreen expires. If you’ve had that tube in your beach bag for two summers, it’s probably time to toss it.

Sunscreen isn’t just about sun protection—it’s the foundation of smart skincare. And reapplying it doesn’t have to be a chore or compromise your glam. Whether you're beach-bound, city-strolling, or heading to a summer wedding, keeping your SPF game strong is a non-negotiable.
